Why I disagree with the concept of a “black history month”.

I just know I’m going to lose followers for this, but I don’t even care. In short, I think black history month is a dumb idea. I don’t think it should be implemented, and here’s why:

1. “Black” is not a heritage. Just like there are many different kinds of “white”, there are many different kinds of “black”.

2. Having a black history “month” implies that in the other 11 months, there’s no need to look at black history. What good does that do?

3. Black people went through some awful crap at the hands of white people, this is true. But what isn’t acknowledged is that different kinds of white people went through some equally awful crap at the hands of other white people as well. Or how asian people also went through some awful crap at the hands of other asian people. Where’s our history month? Where’s Chinese history month? Where’s Estonian history month? I learned about the underground railroad in elementary school, did you learn about gulags? Did you learn about the horrors of the soviet occupation? Not likely. I learned about the holocaust, like everyone else, did you learn about the horrors of the Turkish occupation of Greece? How about the massacre at Nanking? Doubt it. I disagree with the idea that some cultures get to play the “we were discriminated against” card until the end of time, while I, being a blonde, green-eyed white girl, get written off as either a racist or a nazi for being proud of my culture too, and I know many others in a similar position feel exactly the same way. Tell me how that is ok.

So yeah, in short, black history month is ridiculous.
